DEAD WOOD LIVES
I’m a Dutchman dividing my time between The Netherlands and northern New Mexico.
I obtained my MA in print- and bookmaking at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam, in 1976.
Loving wood in all its manifestations, I started making furniture, doors and boxes in the early ‘80s as well.
Traces of use, weathering, warping and color are all important in the making of a piece. My motto in regards to making boxes and furniture is ‘careful nonchalance’.
For inlay I use left-over scraps of hardwood and most pieces are made out of old pallets and crates.
Several years ago I built a simple loom in order to see if I would like weaving as well. I do.
Some of my graphics are in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum and also in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
